Tallis Chamber Orchestra is a small, friendly orchestra that supports talented conductors and soloists early in their careers. It meets and performs in Westleton, Suffolk, and occasionally elsewhere.
The orchestra is made up of amateurs playing to a high standard, and is regularly led by Celia Waterhouse. Distinguished musicians who have appeared with TCO include Emanuel Hurwitz, Kenneth Sillito, Felicity Palmer, Tim Hugh, Andrew Haveron, Janet Craxton, John Eliot Gardner, Jill Gomez, Graham Ross, Nicholas Collon, Florian Zieman, Johann Stuckenbruck, Mark Biggins, Duncan Ward, Alec Frank-Gemmill, Jack Gonzalez-Harding, Tom Poster, Elena Urioste, and Laura van der Heijden.
The repertoire is mainly Baroque and early classical, but also includes later and modern works. Some concerts are strings only, and may be directed from the harpsichord or by the violin leader. Tallis Chamber Orchestra was formed in 1974 under the direction of Philip Simms.
TCO funding comes mainly from player subscriptions and the sale of tickets, with additional help from Gift Aid. However, over the last few of years, like many amateur and professional arts organisations, the orchestra has suffered financially, especially following the Covid-19 pandemic. Venue and music hire and soloists are more expensive and with inflation on the rise, these costs are projected to increase further.
